Should You Repair or Replace Your Furnace?
Many of our customers ask us if they should replace their furnace rather than repair it. There are several factors that go into our answer, but ultimately, the decision must be theirs. This being said, Vredevoogd Heating & Cooling might recommend furnace replacement when the following happens.
System Is too Old
On average, a furnace is expected to last 15 to 20 years, so if your heating system is older than that, it might be time to replace it. You can check your furnace’s age by looking the model number up online.
Reduced Energy Efficiency
A sure sign you need to replace your furnace is shock when you open your energy bill. If your bill has shot to the stratosphere, your furnace is not running efficiently and needs a check at a minimum.
Grime in the Air
Does your home fill with dander, dust, rust, or soot when your heater runs? If so, turn it off and call for help. You don’t want these allergens released into the air as they can cause respiratory illness.
Dry Indoor Air
Even if your heater isn’t equipped with a humidifier, it shouldn’t dry out your indoor air excessively. Dry indoor air can ruin your wood furniture and flooring. It can also create excess static in the air.
Uneven Heating
One sure sign it’s time to replace your heater is if it heats the rooms unevenly. There should not be a noticeable difference between the temperature of the living and bedrooms, for example.
Noises
You know how your furnace sounds so if that changes, have your heater inspected. Noises, such as buzzes, hums, or rattles, suggest structural damage within the heating system – not good!
Cracks or Rust
The exterior of your heating unit can also damage with age. Usually, the unit will crack or get rusty, and if it has, it’s time to replace it. Cracks are especially dangerous as carbon monoxide can leak out of them.
Frequent Repairs
Finally, Vredevoogd Heating & Cooling is happy to repair your heater any time it needs it, but we shouldn’t be coming too often. If we are, it’s time to replace your heater. This saves money in the end.
