3 Reasons Why Your AC Might Breakdown This Summer

First things first: Vredevoogd Heating & Cooling hopes you had a wonderful Labor Day. Now, onto the topic at hand. Fall is just around the corner, but we still have a few more hot weeks ahead of us. You might think your air conditioner is a-okay, but ACs can break down at the end of the summer just as easily as they can at the beginning of the season. What might cause your AC to fail before the fall? Here are three common issues we deal with almost every day.

1. You Didn’t Service it in the Spring

Michigan summers are nowhere near as bad as the summers south of us, but they can still be pretty brutal, and your AC needs some regular TLC. If you read your HVAC unit’s manual or warranty, you likely noticed that most manufacturers recommend professional servicing in the spring and fall. It’s just like your vehicle. Scheduled maintenance helps technicians identify potential problems before they become real problems and also helps keep your HVAC unit running at its best.

2. Your Air Conditioner Overheated

It can happen, and a tripped circuit breaker is one sign your AC has overheated. Reason one above prevents this reason from happening and the reason why (that’s a lot of reasons) is simple: Things that cause your AC to overheat are addressed during its spring checkup. They are:

  • A dirty air filter (which you should change every 30 days yourself between tech visits)
  • Filthy condenser coils
  • Low refrigerant
  • A malfunctioning condenser fan

Again, a maintained AC runs more efficiently because it is clean and all worn parts have been replaced before they fail. If your AC begins to overheat during the summer, it will breakdown.

3. It’s Almost Dead, Jim

For those of you who aren’t Star Trek fans that subhead might escape you. At any rate, the average lifespan of an HVAC unit is 15 to 20 years. If your HVAC unit is almost that old or older, it’s going to breakdown soon and that breakdown might be permanent. Aside from breakdown, other signs you need to replace your HVAC unit include excessive utility bills, strange smells and/or sounds, and the inability to cool your home to the desired temperature.

Don’t panic. Vredevoogd Heating & Cooling is here for you for all of the above and much more, and we service Lansing, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, Michigan. If you have a problem with your HVAC unit, call 844-HVAC-365. We’re happy to come to your home and inspect your HVAC unit.
